If its stuck in third, then thats usually limp mode the TCU will keep the trans in 3rd if something is wrong. Not getting any check engine lights? Made sure all connectors are connected firm on the trans?
Alright, here's my story...A few years ago I decided to swap out my automatic transmission for the 5-speed. Screwed up 5th and reverse...decided to swap the auto back in. Everything seems to be right back in place, its all be quadruple checked. Car starts in and stays in 3rd gear. Anyone out there thats been in a similar perdicament? or Anyone know what my problem might be?

did u flush the auto when u took it out?
if u did, did u refill it with mitsu fluid?!?!?!
check the TCU and make sure that its connected properly and properly grounded to the body
i had the same problems with my 7g...took me forever to figure it out until i realized it was a ground for the tcu (i never bolted it back down just stuck it back under the dash
Your tranny is in "failsafe" mode. There is 1 of 2 things that could be wrong.
-Internal failure in the tranny
or
-Your TCU (Transmission control unit) has failed.
