okay so ive been working on my galant for the past few days and now im creating a custom double din screen i cut the middle bar out and i appled a layer of bondo all purpose putty it looks decent but its all cut up and un even layers how can i make my piece smoothe again so it is ready to be sanded painted and installed

add bondo to the areas that are low and sand down the areas that are high? use the sandpaper to shape the bondo?
