you won't need a lift to do the 5-speed swap, If I'm not mistaken Len (Drybear) did his swap on the floor. My buddy did his 5-speed swap on his Volvo on the floor too. just make sure you have jackstands to hold the car up safely while you are under there.
it's actually pretty simple, I mean they all fit the way they are supposed to, the only thing that confuses me a little bit is the wiring for the ignitiopn, but Denver has kinda cleared it up for me. But I won't know 'til I do it. If you decide to do this let me know i'll give ya hand
I would imagine you would need a full set of sockets, full set of screwdrivers, jacks, and stands. and some wiring equipment. would make things go faster if you had a impact tool i would guess. (I have that so this will be a walk in the park for me.)
can you tell I'm excited??
yeah this will be a while before i can do it because i don't have $2k laying around
yup, it helps to hae connections as well
Nobody does the swap all at once so having the money laying around is not a requirement. You buy the parts a little at a time, just like doing a turbo build or any other major upgrade. Once you have all the parts, then you start the project. A 5 speed swap doesn't require anything more than basic hand tools and some common sense. If you plan on working on your car instead of paying someone to do everything, you're going to need tools anyway.

You also have a link to my 5 speed swap write-up that I did in my driveway, with basic hand tools for less than $1000.

Like Fishboy was saying, I bought these parts over the course of several months so that I wasnt hit with a huge bill at once. I now have about 3k miles on the swap, and no regrets. It feels faster, gets 5 more mpg, and is 10X more fun to drive.
Enjoy!
