TAPPETS or VALVES

:? can anyone help with info about my car .
it,s a 2.0cc 4cyl 16 valve my problem is that the it sounds like their are tap dancers under the bonnet ? the garage i bought it from says that it is just the exhaust valves and that i should be using super unleaded fuel and the dancers will stop . the noise is there when it idles but goes away when it is reved but when i,m at a steady speed i can hear it.

Sounds like the lash adjusters (lifter tick)...

The lifters make a tap-tap noise (faster w/rpms) when they're dirty or they lack oil.

I believe you can clean the lifters or just replace them.

You can also try a heavier/thicker oil.

actually thicker oil will make it worse, probably add some detergent oil additive. added CD2 locally available here and the noise was gone for good.

I don,t think that additive is available here (scotland) but i have added "slick 50" is there a chance this has made the oil thick ?.
if so will an engine flush+new oil help. Also will this tapping noise have any long term affect.
