hmm interesting just goes to show that world spins around money
Found this posted on Mitsu-Media.com forums. Everything in the guy's post is pretty accurate with regards to how bad Garrett has become with their turbos, with apparently even more bad things to come;

After this they opened up a turbo testing lab in shanghai China and quickly moved there turbo overhaul to Mexicali Mexico, quickly after Garrett overhaul went belly-up. So they moved there whole production to Mexicali Mexico, as if that first failure was not a sign.
Garrett Turbos made a quality product for a fair price. A turbo is a precision instrument. Garrett turbos was part of Garrett Air Research (on 190th st. In Torrance ca.) Where they have a huge facility designing turbine engines, and so on. Most of the senior technicians in our main turbo facility (Lomita Blvd Torrance ca) came from our air research. If you’re building jet engines a turbo is not all that difficult. Well Cliff Garrett dies. At that time ALL production of Garrett Turbos was at Lomita Torrance ca. Also all engineering and research was there as well. After we were bought and production was sent to Mexico to save costs. Our production numbers doubled. And cost was cut in half our failure rate tripled. Well who cares Honeywell is making money and lots of it. Turbos are considered Honeywell’s golden egg. They feel that turbos are going to take over big. Which it already has in the diesel market. We make ford diesel turbos, daf, Chevrolet, some Audi, vw, fiat, Perkins. Millions of turbos. And there now all coming from china and Mexico. Well up until lately the company figured if the product was designed in the US and assembled in Mexico we would be ok. Well to further there profit and **** the customer once again....the LAST of what makes turbo American leaves in January 2011. We will close the doors to the Torrance Lab. In Torrance we did all our racing turbos (wrc stuff, Audi racing etc..) then in the garret garage we did the turbos you people buy for your Subaru’s. Actually I take that back. They take turbos that were made on a production line somewhere else in the world, and change a couple of parts on a bench in Torrance (wheels, housing..etc) and send it to you the customer saying it was made in the us.....no it was not it was just repackaged and altered a little. Well as of Jan 2011 all your turbos will be made in Mexico or china or Czech Republic. This is the last Garrett facility in the United States.
We have huge law suits pending due to turbo failures. GM is probably going to leave us.... ford has already sued us. Caterpillar has one of the largest recalls in garret history in the process. Our name is becoming ****. The last few VERY smart guys left in the company are being fired to save costs, but see our profit is already good.....they just want more. Please don’t spend 1500$ on a gt35r. Now that it’s costing Honeywell less to build turbos do you think you will see a smaller bill when you order there product? NO!. They are going to charge you even more for even less. There are countless procedures that are being terminated everyday that made our turbos THE BEST. They keep cutting corner after corner. Did you know that we shave metal off our turbine and compressor housings until they are at the EXTREME minimum needed to contain in the event of failure they are shaving every nickel off the cost of a turbo. Did you know that 2000$ gt40 you buy is all mark up. I won’t dare say the actual cost to the company in fear of a lawsuit but lets just say your sales tax is more then the production cost.
Do not buy these turbos. BorgWarner and mitsu are trying there best to compete with us making a quality product. Honeywell is using its big name to back junky turbos Like Toyota is starting to do. I guarantee in the next 8 months you will see a huge decline in quality. All designing and production is in CHINA AND MEXICO. Honeywell is taking back all there benefits they used to supply us with as employees. That way when they lay us off its as cheap as possible. Instead of saying "Well after we take a hit laying those people off we will make tons" they are just taking back all there benefits so they walk away clean and clear. We used to get a severance package. Which they just took away. One of the head engineers involved in the t3 project. (Designing the first t3) he is still with our company. he was supposed to get 44 weeks of pay if he ever got layed off (30 days and 1 week for every year with the company. 40 years with the company)Due to the new Honeywell rules he gets only 16 weeks pay they stole all that pack after promising it to him for 40 years. My fingers and about to fall off typing all this and I am heated so I don’t care about grammar I’m concerned about you people not supporting a **** company. Take your business elsewhere. Somewhere where you will get what your money pays for. Have a nice day and don’t forget if you hear the name HTT Honeywell Turbo Technologies Stay away
(They still use the garret stamp on the turbos)
I dont follow Mitsu-Media, but how credible is this story?
Not sure what other forums this has been posted on, but I do know Honeywell-Garret has been going through a lot of changes/issues. I know at my work we see a lot of the failed Garret Turbos from the Ford 6.0L trucks come in and get swapped out.
Even the pricing compared to other turbos with less failure rates Garret hasnt been able to compete much...they rode the "brand name" wagon for a while and its catching up. I would have to dig more on the Ford lawsuits, I am sure I could find that stuff. It wouldn't be surprising though if this is all legit as a lot of companies have been closing/outsourcing in the industry.
If true this is just one of a million stories that show that it is cheaper for alot of companies to outsource and make products in other countries then in the US where regulations and taxes do not cut into there profit margin...
The improper spelling and lack of good, legible grammar made me stop reading 1/3 the way through. This is just BAD
inability to write clear, coherent sentences = inability to be credible, in my opinion

After searching a bit more this information has been plastered all over the web. Numerous other forums have it posted up. Some tossed it out as a "troller," but others have seens some noticeable changes in the quality and fail rates apparently.
Believe it or not...I personally see more failed Garrett Turbos come through my work than any other (usually from the Fords off course...).
Garrett really isn't the same company is was before Honeywell bought them out some 10 years ago, they still have some decent turbos but they are definitely up against some major competition with other brands offering better products with less failure rates.
That is normal that a small company that made quality product who got bought out makes less quality product now.
SPD_FRK what year fords are coming through with blown turbos. Ive heard that the first 2 years after the 7.3 diesel was stopped that the 6.4s were having turbo issues. Something about having one additional fin on the compressor wheel and they were just gernading. Is this what you have seen first hand? I ask this because I am looking for a diesel pick up and I love the 03-05 Cummins and also the 03-06 F250s
Light em up.
Oh ok, yea my mind is all bogged with a ton of info about both trucks. So would your opinion to be to stay away from 6.0 fords?
Light em up.
The 6.0L isn't all that bad, but it was a big step "backwards" from the 7.3L Powerstroke. If you are looking for a diesel the 7.3 is a better choice, but if you are considering a Dodge the Cummins has been proven for a long time and easier to work on if you want to.
7.3 was the best because it's built by international
ford is building thier own 6.7 i believe for future trucks
it really sucks spending all that money on a turbo that is crap. they care nothing about reputation. if someone buys a turbo for $1500 it better perform, last, and be made with quality in mind.

That is correct, supposed to be unveiled in the 2011 Models
I think a lot of people are reading it and posting up a lot of "end user feedback" from the brand. A lot of people are still die hard Garrett users, and they will always have that brand loyalty...sad to say it myself, but its very similar to the brand loyalty to Harley Davidson for many including myself.
Garrett still makes decent turbos, but the failure rate has become so much higher in recent years, the fact that they became OEM Equipment suppliers for some is another indication of mass production over qaulity. Holset is another example of the mass production application as they too were used on OEM equipment, but how many of those have we seen failed before the vehicles have hit in excess of 200K+ miles? I have seen numerous Holsets that were taken off trucks pushing 300-400K miles just to get upgraded for a bigger turbo...but the original Holsets rarely had any shaft play and after a good cleaning were like new again.
Compare the price of a GT35 from Garrett, with the Precision turbo, or another equally comparable unit from any other brand and you will see what many say about being "overpriced." Borg Warner is pretty close to the pricing of Garrett's line up of turbos, but then again how many of those have we heard/seen failed? Maybe not many since it is still a new "craze" in the turbo field for tuners, but then again every Borg Warner turbo I have seen has excellent quality. The only failures I have seen on these turbos is snapped shafts, or worn bearings, which is almost 100% of the time due to an oiling issue or other mechanical failures.
We had one turbo come back to us for a rebuild because the shaft snapped. The turbine wheel fins were uniformly folded from hitting the turbine housing. You could tell there was damage done...but what caused this? The guy was doing 90mph in overdrive, hit the gas, trans kicked down and slipped causing a gas pressure spike when the truck redlined. This spun the turbine wheel at what we guessed an east 500K RPMs...too much for this turbo or any honestly and it just let loose.
The above cann happen to any turbo honestly, but we have all read/seen some uncertain and unexplainable failures in the Garrett or other OEM turbos. OEM turbos lack the quality for mass production reasons...the same is becoming very real and true for Garrett.
Honeywell is really buying up alot of shit these days. Even in my industry(retail grocery) they are buying out scanner/scale companies and really turning them into shit. so No wonder.....
