    Differences in 5-speed trans?

What, if any, are the differences between a 5 speed trans for a 1994 GS and a 5-speed for all the other 7g SOHC Galants? I assume there must be some gearing differences as the 94 GS DOHC comes stock with 15" wheels and the other 7gs come stock with 14" wheels.

Wheels don't mean the transmission is different. The overall tire diameter has an affect on final ratios but manufacturers typically run shorter sidewalls on the tires when they upsize wheel diameter so the gear ratios and speedo are all the same and accurate.

That said, download the factory manual that is up on here and check out the different tranny codes offered for 7g and you'll have your answer. I did find that the 7g and 2g dsm M/T trannys have a different code. I haven't looked into what the internal differences are.

the galant tranny and 2g fwd tranny are very similar but different. the dsm tranny have both the f5m33 and f5m31 numbers on them when the 7g tranny has just the f5m31.

now the major difference i have found is the gear ratios. the galant trannies gear ratios are shorter.

    galant tranny gearing
    1st-3.166
    2nd-1.833
    3rd-1.240
    4th-0.896
    5th-0.731
    final-4.322
    reverse is same as first

2g FWD and probably the GS share the same gear ratio and it is as follows
    1st-3.090
    2nd-1.833
    3rd-1.217
    4th-0.888
    5th-0.741
    final-4.153
reverse-3.166( same as the 7g reverse)

maybe slightly beefier internals based on the fact that they had more power stock, but the only way to know is find the power level where the 2g fwd start breaking and see if the 7g tranny can get near there or break sooner.

2g GST and 7g GS are the same exact transmissions with the axle difference.

7g SOHc tranny and 2g Spyder SOHC trannies are exact the same with the axle difference

Thank you for the responses. I'm considering buying a spare 5 speed to have on hand. A junk yard was asking almost double for a 7g 5-speed from a DOHC (verses one from a SOHC) and I was trying to figure out what made it worth that.

I've downloaded a bunch of Mits factory manuals looking for information on repairing my 5-speed (pops out of 5th gear and has now started popping out of 3rd gear). I found the gear ratios for the 4G64 SOHC (trans model F5M31) but nothing on the 4G64 DOHC (still need to identify the trans). Just need to expand my search and look at the 2g GST. Thanks again
