what throttle body are you using?
stock galant GS ECU and harness, nothing for logging since theres nothing. As of now Im just having the MAFT and as soon the idle problems get sorted out I'll add the SAFC
I need some people to chime in for this one.
Engine starts right away it revs really smoothly, but as soon as I let off the gas it idles somewhat erratic and loops and surges alot. Vacuum is low at around -15 hg, and when sometimes it feels like the idle smooths out and It goes back to -22hg. Then it takes crap again and everything starts all over.
I blocked off all nipples on the IM and TB, new gaskets, it already had FIAV block off plate same thing. I dont know what to look for. Timing is dead on, checked and re-checked. Using Evo3 IM and the IM gasket was made out of metal, I put a few coats of copper spray on it
The other problem is the thermostat. The lower and upper radiator hoses are cold, the bottom portion of the t-stat is hot and the heater hoses are hot, car wants to overheat, fans dont kick on. Everything is brand new

so you think the ECU or a wiring issue may not be the issue? or a vac leak? i know you have many of the idle things missing that would cause but those arent the only causes

is your thermostat installed upside down? I know that aftermarket thermostats usually work just fine, but I don't use anything excet OEM thermostats. And at the OEM temperature. Since I have a large oil cooler, i really don't care how hot my coolant gets... not that it does. Honestly we have quite a large radiator for our engines and a two efficient fans that move a lot of air. Factor in that we have more airflow available to our radiator than eclipses do to the grills... I see no need for anything other than the oem temperature and oem thermostat. ECU gives the most timing when its in the proper range anyways. too hot pulls timing, too cold... pulls timing.
As far as your surging, it almost has to be a maft issue. It may be that your ecu is jumping between load rows near idle and as a result the enrichment are off. Does that make sense? I know Matt has a GS ecu with a full iac/fiav blockoff plate and his idle is perfect.
Also, what is your idle set at? Are you using the tach or the ECU to set the idle speed? I know there are logger difficulties with the 7g ecu. Are you using a maft gen2 where you can get some data out of it like the actual RPM?

ahh john you are so smart, thats what you could do, i know you said you would add the SAFC once its running right, but i have read this MAFT issue and guys using the SAFC for tuning it out so it idles smoother. if nothing else gets you anywhere you can try that.

Ok thank you.
All my DSM buddies are coming over tomorrow and hopefully we'll have results by the end of the day. I need to get a stock MAS before because I'll be trying my stock injectors with it. I'll have the SAFC hooked up and bump up the Idle settings. I had to have it set at +30 at idle to have it idle at 14.7 before i took the engine apart, cuz the FIAV block off plate was installed and was giving me AFRRs of 18.0 w/o the adjustment
If nothing helps, then I'll be doing the Mirage distributor mod and run it with standard Galant harness. I really wanted a knock controlled ECU

If you already have a GS harness, why not swap over to a 1g ECU? It should be pretty easy with that setup. I've got the wiring for the fans all figured out.

Well the 94-95 ECU, altho having OBD1 codes, it's closer to 2g pinout than 1g and I already have Evo8 ECU which I'd like to use one day
congrats. This is an awsome day.
Nothing is nicer then a early 90's mitsu
Hey man, This may not be your issue BUT! That Maf sensor proabably needs to be placed before that 90 degree bend. I had issues with mine before i moved it. The GM maf is VERY VERY VERY picky about turbulence and placement. Good job though!
Have you looked at the 1g in a 2g article? there was a thing about installing a potentiometer (sp?) on a certain pin. In this case the ECU was looking for a certain Barometric pressure from the sensor and it would never get it. So by installing the potentiometer you could basically set it where you wanted.
My car had similar issues, would start fine, maybe idle good for a second, but then after a minute, would run real rough. Installed the P meter and you can adjust it till the car runs smoothly.

Look at pg 10 for trouble shooting.
you know what, I thought about it, but I was too frustrated a couple of days ago to try anything. I do it next time I go there
Hm, I've read it, but I never though my car would need it. The MAFT sets the Baro sensor at certain number and it runs like that. The manual is mostly done for 2g ECU which is very sensitive and famous for the p0300 random misfire code. The GS ECU is an OBD1 ECU and less sensitive. I dont have any codes so far. Im expecting the rear O2 sensor code to pop up any time now because I havent wired in the rear o2 simulator yet

yes i think you should move the MAS further away from the throttle. GM sensors really are very picky. Honestly if you has the stock mitsu mas there it would probably be finicky too.
Side note, glad to see you've got it running! I'm anxious to see how everything runs on the GS ecu. That was the other road i could have taken when I reached the fork in the road of weather to wire in a 1g ecu or stay with the stocker when I did my swap years ago.
Super stoked for you man. Can't wait to see some vids of it blistering pavement

Ok,
-I moved the GM MAS back to were it used to be;
- the entire suspension is put together;
- I need to put the dust shields around the engine and trans
- Installed the SAFC
- Got the wideband to work again
- I need to wire in the boost gauge
Tomorrow should be a test day, break-in time too.
I have to play with the TPS tomorrow. Im getting some weird percentages on the SAFC. It reads 100% throttle before it is at WOT...hm
