Changing Timing Belt and Water Pump

Ok, I'm at 60k, if I can get ahold of the belt and a water pump, how difficult will this be to change out? I will have an experienced mechanic with me, but he is not familiar with the G rides. The labor should only run me like $100 bucks, but if this is way too hard, I make take it to a shop. I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Also, if you think I can do this without a mechanic....let me know too...I'm probably a 5 out of 10 on the Mechanically Insane scale.

Search the board for timing belt for the exact discussion. We've discussed this and according to our resident Mitsu tech, manybrews, it's not recommended, primarily because there are two balance shafts that have to be aligned and they're very easy to get 180 degrees out of phase.

Genuine experience carries a lot more credibility than the ability to answer a question.

that, and the other main reason... if you screw it up, you WILL bend valves. And the people that think it cant happen to them are the first ones it always happens too.

manybrews, i consider myself a semi expierenced ford technition, ive done many timing belts on escorts and focuses, never done a v6 tho, which i have one. im at 40k now, and its not gonna take me long to get to 60k. are the mitsus very hard? should i get some type of camshaft lock? is there something i should especially look out for when im lining up the cams and crank?

if youre technically inclined, theres nothing to it.

they arent THAT hard. but if you do screw it up, you will tweak valves. so be careful.

you wont need anytype of cam lock, as the cams will stay nicely at TDC when you yank the belt.

Yeah, I've looked it over and my mechanic knows his shiznit pretty damn good. There isn't much too it and if everything is marked when I take the belt off there will be no "ifs" "ands" or "buts" about the whole deal.

Cant be harder than replacing a tranny on a Chevy Lumina....(worst time of my life)
